One of Nigeria’s most prolific forward in Europe is already being considered a club great less than two years with the side
Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been included in a list of 50 greatest players to wear the colours of German Bundesliga club Union Berlin.
The former Liverpool signing is a man highly esteemed in Berlin, especially since making a club-record switch last summer.
Awoniyi netted five league goals while on loan at Union Berlin last term and smashed in another 15 this campaign to become the Iron Ones’ leading goalscorer in the Bundesliga.
A brace from the Nigeria international in the last match of the season against Bochum secured a thrilling 3-2 victory, sealing a first-ever Europa League qualification for the Iron Ones.
It is no surprise that the former Golden Eaglets hero – adored by Union Berlin’s supporters young and old – is already considered one of the club’s greats.
And in their list of 50 greatest Union players in history, Berlin-based publications Bz-Berlin has placed Awoniyi in a respectable 14th position.
But despite his esteemed status in Germany, Awoniyi continues to be sidelined by the Nigerian national team handlers.
New head coach Jose Peseiro snubbed the 24-year-old for the Super Eagles’ recent tour to the United States, and the squad invited for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers next week.
