Union continued their impressive run with a victory against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday
Union Berlin welcomed Frankfurt to the capital on Sunday as they took their opponents to the cleaners.
Frankfurt, still basking in their defeat of Barcelona and progression to the semifinal of the Europa League were pegged back after 17 minutes at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
Taiwo Awoniyi scored his 13th goal of the ongoing campaign in 27 games and was a constant thorn in the flesh of the Frankfurt defense.
Awoniyi won a tussle against Frankfurt captain Hinteregger before outmuscling Ndicka and slammed home the first goal of the game.
Grischa Promel scored the second of the game just four minutes later to stun the travelling Frankfurt supporters.
The second half failed to maintain the level of the first as Union kept their lead and grip on the game.
Awoniyi was substituted in the 81st minute for Sven Michel but had lasted long enough to help his team with another three vital points to their quest for Europe next season.
The win puts Union in sixth place in the Bundesliga, four points below Freiburg in fifth position.
Awoniyi, Soccernet has gathered is attracting interest from the Premier League and may be on his way out of the Bundesliga at the end of the season.
