Late Iwobi goal helps Everton snatch important win

The Super Eagles star has been in the doldrums in recent weeks, but he proved his mettle at Goodison Park on Thursday

Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi scored a stoppage-time clincher for Everton to help the Toffees secure a 1-0 victory over Newcastle at Goodison Park.

Everton have been poor in recent weeks, losing four of their five previous games. And they faced yet another tough opposition Newcastle.

The Magpies have been one of the best teams in the Premier League since the beginning of the year. Unbeaten in nine games, Newcastle had already put behind all fears of relegation from the Premier League.

Iwobi returned to Frank Lampard's starting eleven for the first time since Everton's 1-0 loss to Manchester City last month. The 25-year-old featured in a more advanced role for the Toffees.

The first half was uneventful, but Newcastle held the bulk of the possession.

However, the game sparked to life in the second half, with bookings flying either way. A fan ran into the pitch in the middle of the game and tied himself to the goalposts forcing a five-minute delay.

The situation got dire for Everton in the 83rd minute when Allan was sent off following a VAR review for a poor tackle.

Considering the stoppages, referee Craig Pawson added 14 minutes. In the ninth minute of the stoppage time, Iwobi showed class. He received a pass from Dominic Calvert-Lewin to slot home behind Dubravka in goal for Newcastle.

The victory takes Everton to 25 points, three points above the relegation zone.
