It’s been a tough past few days for Union Berlin and Super Eagles attacker, Taiwo Awoniyi as he scored an own goal, hours after being dropped to the standby list of the Super Eagles.
The attacker turned the ball in his own net against VFL Wolfsburg on Saturday and had an assist controversially chalked off in the same game after he was adjudged to have fouled a Wolfsburg player.
Some sections of the Union Berlin fan base have blamed the attacker for being at the wrong side of defending but his coach Urs Fischer has leapt to his defence.
“There is a clear assignment for corner kicks. Taiwo’s job is to appropriately attack a ball that hits the front post. He has decided to go. So to blame him now is going too far for me,” Fischer said.
Union Berlin Vice captain, Grischa Promel told the referee that the Union goal chalked off should have stood.
“For me, Arnold is already falling. He loses his balance, which gives Taiwo Awoniyi a small advantage, and he just falls over, ” a visibly angry Promel said.
