Super Eagles star Semi Ajayi helps West Brom keep first clean sheet in four league games

The 28-year-old was in action on Monday night as the Baggies ended a run of three straight losses in the English second division

Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi was one of West Brom’s best players on Monday night as they played out a goalless draw against Blackburn Rovers in their Skybet Championship.

Ajayi had not really played much for West Brom in the last two months, but he is now back into reckoning following the arrival of Steve Bruce.

Monday night’s clash was his second consecutive start under the ex-Manchester United defender. His first game did not go according to plan as West Brom lost 2-0 to Sheffield United.

However, there was an improvement in his second game, helping the Baggies keep their first clean sheet in four league games.

Ajayi was solid at the back making four clearances and blocking one goalbound effort. He also won four duels and also completed 36 of his 40 attempted passes.

Unfortunately, though, West Brom could not find a breakthrough at the other end. Nonetheless, Ajayi’s performance at the back impressed Bruce, who praised the Nigerian and his defensive partner.

“The defenders played very well,” Bruce said on West Brom’s website.

“I’m pleased with them two and Sam looks like a very assured goalkeeper. You can see why he is in the England squad.”

The result leaves West Brom in eighth place, three points off the final playoff spots.
