Leicester City England-born Nigerian star happy to score in the Foxes win against West Ham

The Foxes boosted their survival hopes in the FA Women’s Super League with a win against the Hammers on Sunday

Super Falcons star Ashleigh Plumptre has expressed her happiness after she helped Leicester City beat West Ham in their WSL clash on Sunday afternoon.

Plumptre was on target as Leicester moved up to tenth on the table with a 3-0 win over the Hammers. The 23-year-old headed in the second goal in the ninth minute after Natasha Flint had put the Foxes ahead inside two minutes.

It was her first goal in 14 league games this season and second in all competitions. And speaking after the win, Plumptre could not contain her joy, saying it is one of the best feelings in the world.

“It feels really good, and I think my celebration says it all, Plumptre said as per Leicester Mercury.

“For me, I’m passionate about playing for this team, and if I can contribute going forward, then that’s brilliant – obviously, my main role is to defend well.”

“But it means a lot because ultimately I wanted to get promoted with this team and to get my first FA WSL goal, it’s genuinely one of the best feelings in the world.”

Plumptre’s goal came from a corner kick, and she revealed it’s a result of consistent practice in training. The ex-England youth star is 1.80m tall, and as a result, she is always the target when the Foxes take corner kicks.

“In training, we practice set-pieces quite a lot, and people say I’m the target.”

“Then I end up being the decoy, and everyone else scores, so it was a bit of a shock.”

Plumptre will now turn her attention to international duty, where she will hope to make her competitive debut for the Super Falcons.

Although she was born in England and played for the country’s youth teams, Plumptre qualifies to play for Nigeria through her father.

She was first called up to Nigeria’s squad in July 2021, but it was just for a training camp in Austria. However, after receiving the all-clear from FIFA, Plumptre is now set for her competitive debut in Nigeria’s Africa Women’s Cup of Nations qualifier against Ivory Coast.
