Ex-international thumbs up Eguavoen-Amuneke combo for Super Eagles

Ex-international thumbs up Eguavoen-Amuneke combo for Super Eagles

The NFF is yet to announce the appointment of the two home-grown tacticians, but many cannot wait to have them steer the affairs of the senior national team

1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning star Henry Nwosu is convinced that the Nigeria Football Federation has made the right decision by appointing Augustine Eguavoen and Emmanuel Amuneke as joint-head coaches of the Super Eagles.

The three-time African champions are currently without a handler after Eguavoen stepped down from his interim role following the team's early elimination from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 56-year-old had taken charge after long-serving German Gernot Rohr was sacked in December following a string of uninspiring performances.

The NFF initially lined up Portuguese manager Jose Peseiro as the substantive head coach, but Eguavoen impressed at the Afcon, guiding the Super Eagles to three group stage wins.

The local media is awash with reports that the Sapele-born coach has been chosen to take charge of the Eagles alongside former Tanzania head coach Amuneke. Both were members of the Super Eagles side that lifted the 1994 Nations Cup and appeared at the FIFA World Cup for the first time later that year.

The NFF is yet to confirm or deny the reports.

But former Nigerian midfielder Nwosu believes it is a step in the right direction if the reports are accurate.

“The truth is that both Eguaveon and Amuneke played this game enduringly and would formulate deadly strategy now that NFF has given them the green light to handle the national team at last,” the former Golden Eaglets coach told Daily Sports.

“Now that it is settled, an eye must be on the ball so as to make great result from Nigeria/Ghana Qatar 2022 World Cup pay-off coming up next month.”

Eguavoen's coaching CV includes leading the Super Eagles to win the bronze medal at the 2006 Afcon.

1994 African Footballer of the Year Amuneke also led a Victor Osimhen-inspired Golden Eaglets to glory at the 2015 FIFA u-17 World Cup before guiding Tanzania to their second-ever appearance at the Afcon in 2019.

    It only in Nigeria.
For God sake, even though sports and politics can still marry in a way, for effective growth I think we should start by doing the right thing first.
I just hope there is know contract agreement from the NFF and Mr. Jose Posiero, else it exposes how incompetent those that overseas the affairs of the NFF are.

On the side of Augustine Eguavon and Emmanuel Amunike. For God sake this two can’t work, expecially when Mr. Augustine Eguavon instrumentations supercede that of Amunike.

Without fear or favor I think we should give Mr. Posiero a chance, Amunike can assist him fine. Whether you like it or not Mr Gernet Rohr also played a major role in scouting the crop of players we have right now.
We never can’t tell what he (Mr. Posiero) can offer. We still have those players that are hungry and ready to make the difference if properly managed. We have good but not better players now, but do we have the chance of getting the better and best players in future? To me I will say yes. If only the likes of Victor Osigmeh, Wilfred Ndidi, Emmanuel Danis, Joe Aribo, Moses Simon, Ola Aina, Chigozie Awazien, Sanusi, and Maduka Okoye can improve on the form they are right now.

To me Mr. Augustine Eguavon still lack that Titical approach to lead this exciting lads.
The game against Tunisian really exposed Mr Eguavon. He is not flexible in twisting formation, on how to read and counter your opponents idea he lack alot there.

So please NFF separate football from politics this time.

your right, i think Mr Posiero should take over as the super eagles coach but on a second thought, i would prefer Mr Emmanuel Amunike to be the super eagles head coach. This is because most players currently in the super eagles are his boys mixed with 2013 boys too.

The foreign coach Mr posiero can become his first assitant, must this foreign coaches be the Head coach always?? they too should under study are coaches and see how the mentality of our boys are, in the future they could take over, or they can also manage our under 23 team to know how we play, the mentality of the boys. They (foreign coach) just come in here and make millions of Dollars without any noticable impact.
