“No easy opponents” – Nigeria’s most expensive goalkeeper speaks on Super Eagles vs. Liberia

The three-time continental kings continue their chase for a seventh appearance at the World Cup with a clash against the Lone Star in Morocco

Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has revealed that the Super Eagles are ready to do whatever it takes to carve out the needed victory when they trade tackles with Liberia on Saturday.

Nigeria face the Liberians at the Grand Stade de Tangier in a matchday five tie of the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

The Super Eagles currently sit atop Group C with nine points from four games, two more than second-place Cape Verde.

Victory over the Lone Star today, and failure by Cape Verde to amass all three points against the Central African Republic also on Saturday, will send the Super Eagles to the knockout round of the qualifying series with a game to spare.

The former African champions have a good crop of top footballers already in camp in Morocco, including Napoli ace Victor Osimhen and Villarreal star Samuel Chukwueze, who returned to the squad after an injury layoff.

2019 Africa Cup of Nations top scorer Odion Ighalo is also back after reversing his decision to retire.

And Okoye, who only this week became a Watford player and Nigeria’s most expensive goalkeeper in history, has pointed out that the Super Eagles look ready to triumph over Liberia.

“It (Training) has been good, we are getting ready for the match on Saturday, and it’s a good vibe here,” the 22-year-old told the Super Eagles media team.

“Everybody is fit; we have injured players back; I can’t wait for Saturday.

“From the last matches, we could learn that there is no easy opponent here in Africa, so we have to be very focused, we have to be one hundred percent, and I’m sure we’ll get the three points on Saturday.”

In October, the Super Eagles lost their World Cup qualifying unbeaten home record when they fell to a shocking 1-0 defeat to the Central African Republic in Lagos. The team repaired their battered image with a 2-0 win over the same opponents in Cameroon three days later.

Nigeria Football Federation President Amaju Pinnick has already charged the Super Eagles to avoid making mistakes against Liberia.
