AFCON: Super Eagles coach Rohr confirms he has submitted a 40-man list to CAF

by Joba Ogunwale

in News, NewsNow, Nigeria

The German tactician's future as the coach of the three-time African champions is unclear, but he is carrying on with his work ahead of the biennial tournament next year

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has revealed he has sent a provisional list of 40 players to CAF on the 15th of November ahead of next year's Africa Cup of Nations.

Although Rohr role as Nigeria's coach has become untenable, the former Burkina Faso manager has not allowed doubts over his future to disturb his work.

In a short conversation with Soccernet, the 68-year-old tactician revealed he had sent the list of a 40-man provisional list on the 15th of November as required by CAF, while he is also moving forward with his plan.

“We had to do a list of 40 players before the 15th of November. I had also my plans,” Rohr told Soccernet.

However, it is still unclear if Rohr will lead the team to the competition next year. The former Bordeaux star has been in charge since 2016, but he is on the brink of the sack following the Super Eagles recent disappointing performances.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is currently searching for funds to pay off the German as his contract does not expire until the end of next year.

Meanwhile, former Super Eagles coach Jo Bonfrèree has formally applied to take over from Rohr.

Rohr Gerrot should get out of Super Eagle. He is not an average coach. Can’t even coach a forth division team and here he is taking his retirement benefit from corruption ridden country via NFF

The NFF is simply a big distraction at this moment. They did the same thing with the late Keshi until he completely lost focus. This man is going ahead with his plans. Rohr has met the targets given him.. We do not seem to learn from history. NFF is known to take months to get any new coach.. My take is that we leave him alone to complete his job. There is no guarantee that your new coach will perform any magic. Leave this man and he will qualify us for the world cup. Amoudu was sacked after winning bronze in AF con. What did the next coach do that Amoudu could not have done in the world cup?. NFF pay your coaches and players at the right time and go play football in Abuja or U yo instead of playing in bad pitches just to satisfy state governments.. In these stadiums you will get the best of the super eagles. We are behaving as if Rohr is the problem. Even the ex Internationals who abandoned the team or could not qualify for AFcon are all criticizing the one who changed the narrative as far as qualifying for big tournaments is concerned.

You are spot on.Before the appointment of Rohr,we failed to even qualify for Afcon, some of the loudmouths that are making noise now had nothing to offer then.Siasia,Oliseh did not qualify for Afcon nor the world Cup.we have consistently qualified for Afcon and World Cup under Rohr.its not all the time that you play superlative football even the best teams falter at times but the most important thing is grinding out results even when not playing at your best.we should allow the man complete his contract and then maybe start afresh. even the NFF is riddled with corruption.

Nigerians are hardly grateful and always bite the fingers that have fed them. The coach is doing his best, but the players are not playing as expected. The best coach so far took Nigeria to USA ’94 and won the Tunisia ’94, and he was let go thereafter only to retain his assistant. History will always repeat itself with Nigeria as it hardly learn from the past.

They should leave Rohr alone to continue doing his job. How can NFF sack a coach that has qualified for AFCON and almost World cup? This is a big distraction that should not be allowed to succeed.

Rohr should be shown the exit door….after the AFCON Tournament. Our recent outings have been very poor and Rohr’s lapses are becoming quite glaring. Tactically he’s bereft of ideas. Again, I think he has lost control of the lads.

Well time is too short so let forget about sacking him. We can get a new coach after world cup in quatar. My take though. Like someone esrlier said a new coach can not perform magic.

Easy to criticise, it is not smart that few weeks to afican nations cup , NFF is muting an idea of sacking the coach. He is above average in my opinion and i think the fallacy of most people asking he be sacked is that the grass is greener on their imaginary other side. Ask them to mention a suitable replacement their weakness of idea gets exposed. We don,t learn from history well enough. For the first time we won all 3 away matches in a group qualifier maybe not convincingly, but we can get better at the nations cup.

The truth is that Rhor is a victim of our inefficiency and witch-hunt. This guy worked under very unconventional conditions and was stillchunning out results. he has virtually met all the set out goals placed on his contract but we are not appreciative.

It would have been a good idea to enhance his qualities by engaging competent tacticians or technicians as the case may be . It is almost an embarrassing situation we have placed ourselves by this call for his sack.

I am appalled, to say the least, by this very urgly attitudes towards a very good worker. He did so well where others alike failed woefully or abandoned the ship.

This man did nothing wrong. He wanted the best for our country.

Besides, the time and moment for this call is like a spell cast on us as a people. How could one imagin sacking a coach at this auspicious time?

Please, let us rethink and not fall a victim of this obsurd stupidity! We can do better than this. Whoever is calling for his sack is just short sighted and does not mean well for our football.

This is a coach that is being owed months and months of salaries like the players…yet he performed! He qualified the team for all competitions before him. He hardly complains even with a country without a formidable league.

He should be alowed to finish his assignments for goodness sake!

NFF is killing Nigerian football with corruption; but for corruption, would Rohr ever been appointed as SE assistant coach ?

Did NFF had wanted Rohr to perform magic of what he is not capable of doing ? Or how else could they have employed a coach that was adjudged not having technical capability to coach tinny Gabon, Niger and Burkina Faso where he was dismissed with appalling outrageous F9 woeful records as lower as 13% and 27% ; a coach that just a glanced at his record Orji Kalu did not waste time by dismissing his application to coach Enyiba of not competent to handle Aba Elephant

A Coach is as good as his 3 past teams ; with his abnormal past 3 teams shameful records ; can NFF tell Nigerians the criteria used to employ Rohr ?

NFF are group of jesters expecting Rohr that has never won even U15 cup in his native land at age 68 and you expect him to perform magic at 70 years.

Rohr is only collecting his retirement money while it last , as no corrupt country in this world would have allowed Rohr to complete one term , let alone 3 tenure of 6 years going , making him the longest serving Super Eagles in the history of Nigeria.

Give Rohr another decade , SE is going no where ; all the qualifying are purely players individual efforts, that is why he has lost respect of those players , particularly his latest corrupt invitation to the likes of the Igahalo that is playing his retirement games in the holy land of Saudi , with the likes of unmerited inactive goalkeeper John Noble a benched warmer ahead of his superior goalkeeper that benched him perpetually in his Eyimba club .
