Sour Saturday: Awoniyi, Iheanacho, Ejuke suffer defeats

It was a disappointing day for several Nigerian international footballers as their European clubs ended on the losing sides.

Ademola Lookman replaced Kelechi Iheanacho at halftime, but it did little to help Leicester City avoid a 2-0 home loss to Arsenal.

Defender Gabriel Magalhães and young midfielder Emile Smith Rowe scored for the Gunners within the opening 18 minutes to force yet another defeat down the throat of a Leicester side that had Wilfred Ndidi on the substitute bench.

At Turf Moor, Frank Onyeka was in the Brentford side that fell 3-1 away to Burnley. The home side was already leading three-nil before Onyeka was replaced 13 minutes into the second period.

Che Adams’ 20th-minute shot was all Southampton needed to force a 1-0 defeat down the throat of William Troost-Ekong’s Watford at the Vicarage Road.

Emmanuel Dennis was suspended for the encounter after picking up his fifth yellow card in the 5-2 triumph over Everton last weekend.

In Union Berlin’s biggest game of the season, Taiwo Awoniyi fired blanks as champions Bayern Munich ran out 5-2 winners at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.

Robert Lewandowksi scored twice, and Leroy Sane added a third in the opening 34 minutes as the visitors made amends for their 5-0 DFB Pokal loss at Borussia Monchengladbach in midweek.

Super Eagles dribbling wizard Chidera Ejuke tried his best, but it was ultimately not enough as Rubin Kazan halted CSKA Moscow’s three-match winning streak with a last-ditch 1-0 win at the Kazan’ Arena.

Ejuke had been replaced by Yakovlev in the 74th minute before Kostyukov netted the winning goal in stoppage time.
