There was already no love lost between Marseille and Genk, but with the transfer saga going on for Chelsea’s Nigerian striker, the relationship between the two clubs could be worsened.
Genk were reported to have sealed the deal for Nigerian forward Ike Ugbo earlier this week. According to Het Nieuws, the deal had been finalised, and it was only a matter of time before it would be announced.
All of that talk may soon turn out to be a farce, as reports from transfer guru Fabrizio Romano indicate that Marseille are looking to hijack the deal.
Reports from the Sun also suggest that Marseille are preparing to place an audacious bid to take the 22-year-old from Genk’s grasp.
The situation may worsen an already dented relationship between the two clubs. As the two already have history from last season.
Rtbf reports that Marseille had an agreement in principle with Genk for Joakim Maehle last season, but at the last minute, the Blue-whites increased the fee for the Dane, and Marseille lost Maehle to Atalanta, who were ready to match Genk’s asking fee.
With the history between the two clubs, hijacking Ike Ugbo from Genk’s grasp could be a decisive blow to their relationships.
