Tottenham youngster to join the Super Eagles squad for Mexico friendly

The Super Eagles team that takes on El tri in an international friendly on July 4 will now have a foreign professional player join the home-based players

Tottenham’s U-23 goalkeeper Joshua Olayemi has been called up to Nigeria’s squad for the friendly clash against Mexico on July 4 at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

Olayemi will replace the injured team captain Ikechukwu Ezenwa in the squad. His invitation means he’s the only foreign-based player in the team as the rest of the team play their football in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

The 20-year-old was born in England but to Nigerian parents, which makes him eligible for the three-time African Champions.

He came through the club’s Academy ranks, having played for the youth team and U18 side. Olayemi is currently Spurs U23 goalkeeper, although he had his first experience of senior football while on loan at National League side Maidenhead United between October 2020 and January 2021.

The youngster conceded 18 goals and kept ten clean sheets in his 21 appearances for Spurs U18 side. He also has 17 appearances in the Premier League 2, conceding 21 times and keeping three clean sheets.

Olayemi has also represented England at the U-15 and U-16 levels.

He be like say they want tell us another story ooo. Who make Nigeria like this. . Team could have been a combination of pros and local .going for the game. Anyway I won’t be surprised if one or two in mls are called on

This team could have include some of the untested foreign base players, the likes of obinna nwobolo, nwakali, emeka eze, kayode, yakubu,Paul mukairu, bassey of rangers, tau sodje etc

  3. Why is it not combination of untest foreign base players and local players, because we all know that it’s foreign base players that will still persecute future games for us, the problem with our administrators is that they keep on deceiving themselves! My question is that after this Mexico friendly what is next for the home base players.

They are only testing coaching ability with Nigeria coach and foreign coach…they should sack foreign coach if he’s not working to taste…padi padi na football for Naija

  5. Courage Oga-John says:

Our football is in disarray, administrators are just confused, they don’t know exactly what they are doing cos there is no clear cut goal set. How can the task of getting a team to prosecute a friendly be so cumbersome?

  6. Otobong says:

My people the problem is that all these players you are calling are currently rounding off enjoyments and preparing for their pre season and since the match is not in the FIFA free window there is a problem of getting those guys to agree to play for the team… I hope you all understand… Rather than risk their positioning with their clubs the government decided let’s use our second tier super Eagles…
