The curious case of Paul Onuachu

It has been over three months since Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu shattered Belgium’s Jupiler League records.

Since the 1979/1980 season, no one has scored more goals(33) in a season than Onuachu. The last player to do so was Erwin Vanderbergh for Anderlecht.

Nigerian football lovers and followers hoped that the feat of the forward’s display would not go unnoticed. His performance was expected to cause a stir amongst the big European boys.

However, such has not been the case for the 6’7 hitman as there has been somewhat of a lull in the demand for his services. The biggest team that has shown concrete interest so far is West Ham.

At some point, it looked like Arsenal would be in the mix of things after Onuachu openly stated his love for the London club, but it has all amounted to nought.

The lanky striker looked off-colour during pre-season games, with fellow Nigerian Cyril Dessers stealing the show. The striker struggled to get goals, and it was clear that the entire saga was getting to him.

The same occurrence repeated itself in the Blue-whites season opener against Standard Liege. Onuachu was substituted in the 62nd minute, but his replacement Dessers gave the assist that led to Genk’s equaliser.

It’s already one game into the Jupiler League season, and one month to the end of the transfer window in England, the clock is ticking.
