Several Nigerian internationals are plying their trade for a few clubs in the elite division in Europe, but one of the forgotten ones is expected to be elevated to club skipper ahead of next season
One-cap Super Eagles forward Anthony Nwakaeme is to become the captain of Turkish side Trabzonspor, after three productive years with the Trabzon-based side, as per 61Saat.
Trabzonspor are one of the most decorated clubs in Turkey, winning seven Süper Lig titles – the first non-Istanbul-based club to win the league. The Black Sea Storm have also won nine Federation Cup titles.
And after finishing fourth in the 2020-21 campaign, the coach Abdullahi Avici-led team will feature in the inaugural edition of the Europa Conference League.
Nwakaeme won three Ligat ha’Al titles in Israel with Hapoel Be’er Sheva before moving to Trabzonspor in 2018.
The 32-year-old has scored 32 goals and supplied 29 assists in 109 games for Trabzonspor, winning the Turkish Cup and the Super Cup.
However, the former FC Universitatea Cluj star has not been able to reciprocate his club success at the national team level.
Nwakaeme made his Super Eagles debut on November 10, 2017, during a World Cup qualifying match against Algeria.
He has not earned another call up from head coach Gernot Rohr since, despite his impressive performances for Trabzonspor.
