The 67-year-old yet again came under criticism after the Super Eagles failed to win any of their two games against Cameroon
Former Nigerian midfielder Garba Lawal has faulted Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr over the team’s unimpressive performance in the friendly against fierce rivals, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.
Recall that in the double-header friendly game against Cameroon in Austria, the Super Eagles were beaten 1-0 before being forced to a goalless draw in the second game.
In an exclusive chat with Soccernet.ng, Lawal said Rohr failed to show his technical capacity, saying that there was no excuse for their poor display, which, according to him, could hurt their 2022 World Cup qualification chances.
“The Super Eagles performance in the last two international friendly games they played against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon was not too impressive,” Lawal told Soccernet.
“It is not an excuse that because some players missed out on the game, that was why the team failed to display their ‘A’ game.”
“For me, Rohr has failed to showcase his technical qualities in the two games regardless of the fact that it’s a friendly game.”
“If the team continues to play like this, then I have serious doubt that the team may find it difficult to make it through from their 2022 World Cup qualifying group,” Lawal added.
Lawal was part of the Super Eagles squad at the FIFA World Cups in 1998, where he played a key role in the 3–2 win over Spain in Nigeria’s first match of the tournament and at the 2002 competition. He won the Olympic gold medal in 1996.
He represented Nigeria at four editions of the African Cup of Nations: 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006, scoring in all but the first.
