The Rangers star is not part of the 31 players invited by Gernot Rohr for the Super Eagles friendly against the Indomitable Lions
Former Nigerian midfielder Henry Nwosu has questioned the omission of Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun from the list of players invited by Gernot Rohr for the international friendly game against Cameroon.
On Friday, Rohr released a list of 31 players for the international friendly game against Cameroon billed for Wiener Neustadt Stadium in Austria next month.
The 31-man list will be trimmed to 23 players before the game against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon. This is part of the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) plan to keep the team prepared for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Liberia in September.
Nigeria are in Group C of the qualifiers with Cape Verde, Liberia, and the Central African Republic, while Cameroon are in Group D alongside the Ivory Coast, Mozambique, and Malawi.
However, Balogun is not part of the squad to face Cameroon next month, and that’s left Nwosu baffled.
In a chat with Soccernet.ng, Nwosu said that he’s yet to come to terms with Leon Balogun’s omission from the Cameroon game.
He said that Balogun has been an integral part of the Super Eagles squad and has a good understanding of William Troost-Ekong in the defence.
“I am still confused on why Gernot Rohr omitted Leon Balogun from the list of players that will confront Cameroon in an international friendly game next month.
“Balogun’s partnership with Troost-Ekong has been great for the team, and recently he helped Rangers win the Scottish Premier League. He has been consistent this season, and I see no reason why he should be omitted.”
The former Mainz star has 31 international caps since making his debut in 2014.
