Gernot Rohr, A ‘Great Harm’ To Nigeria Football – Former International Wants Super Eagles Coach Sacked

in AFCON, News, Nigeria

Criticisms continue to trail the German tactician after guiding the Nigerian national football team to two disappointing draws against Sierra Leone, a side 88 places below the Super Eagles on the FIFA World ranking

Former Nigeria international Eugene Agagbe believes coach Gernot Rohr has no business coaching the Super Eagles.

Agagbe wonders why the Nigeria Football Federation handed the former Gabon coach a two-year contract extension earlier in the year.

Rohr was appointed as the Super Eagles in 2016. He earned his contract renewal two years later after helping the three-time African champions qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The former Bordeaux manager also led Nigeria to a third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt last year, earning himself another contract extension in March 2020.

But Rohr ran into troubled waters after seeing his side manage two disastrous draws against Sierra Leone this past week, and Agagbe believes the German gaffer has not performed as well as Nigeria's former indigenous coach Stephen Keshi.

“I put all the blame on the NFF. They are responsible for the dwindling fortunes of the Super Eagles. I still don’t understand why they are insisting on retaining Gernot Rohr as the national team coach,” the Lobi Stars Youth Coach told the Daily Trust.

“Rohr has done great harm to our football. He has not performed to the level to be retained as technical adviser of the Super Eagles.

“The late Stephen Keshi, with all the distractions from his employers, did just three and a half years but won the 2013 AFCON and also qualified us for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

“These are the types of records that we hold unto. It is time we call a spade a spade because we have to give our own coaches a chance.”

The Super Eagles will end 2020 without a win, with the 2013 African champions losing to Algeria and drawing to Tunisia last month in friendly games arranged after the coronavirus induced break.

However, Nigeria remain on course to qualify for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon. The team sits atop Group L of the Afcon-qualifying series with eight points earned in four matches played.
