Sunday Oliseh’s Spot-on Verdict On Bayern Munich’s Champions League Final Victory

The legendary Nigerian midfielder watched Die Roten pip Paris Saint-Germain to the most significant club honour in Europe and thought a combination of factors contributed to the triumph

Former Borussia Dortmund star Sunday Oliseh has lauded Bayern Munich for lifting the 2020 UEFA Champions League trophy and thereby clinching a historic treble of the European Cup, the Bundesliga title as well as the DFB Pokal.

It’s just the second time in history that FC Bayern have garnered such a trio of trophies, replicating the stunning feat of the club’s 2012/13 squad.

But for much of the first half of the game played at the Estadio da Luz on Sunday night, Bayern rode their luck as PSG missed one clear-cut chance after another. The expensively-put-together trio of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, and Angel Di Maria was guilty of fluffing at least one opportunity each.

The story changed after the interval, though, when Hansi Flick’s men returned from the dressing room looking the sharper, fitter, and more organized of the two teams.

Fittingly, Frenchman Kingsley Coman headed the winning goal against his former club in the hour-mark.

Oliseh analyzes that the early return of the Bundesliga from the coronavirus hiatus and a large dose of good fortune was crucial in helping the hardworking Germans outlast their French counterparts.

“The Germans (Bayern Munich) once again excel thanks to better organisation, foresight & hard-work,” the former Super Eagles captain and coach wrote on Twitter.

“(The Bundesliga) re-started before every other league with such a scenario in mind.

“(Bayern) looked physically better with a clear game plan & got lucky too. They just won the Treble! League, Cup & ECL #PSGBayern.”

One of Nigeria’s finest ever defensive midfielders, Oliseh, won a few trophies playing for clubs in Italy and Germany but never the UEFA Champions League.
