The 22-year-old missed Die Nullfünfer’s stunning win at the Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday night due to the nasty collision he suffered in the 1-0 loss to Cologne on Sunday

Mainz players have dedicated their win over Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday to Nigerian star, Taiwo Awoniyi, who missed the encounter.

Jonathan Burkardt’s 39th-minute strike and Jean-Philippe Mateta’s penalty earned Achim Beierlorzer’s side a surprising win against Lucien Favre’s men.

They achieved the impressive feat without Awoniyi who is still recovering from the incident in Mainz clash against Cologne.

The former Golden Eaglets suffered a concussion and had to be prevented from swallowing his tongue by the referee. Awoniyi saw just twenty minutes of that encounter as he was rushed to the hospital afterwards.

Although he is now stable, Awoniyi was excluded from Mainz trip to Dortmund. But following the match, his teammates dedicated the win to him by displaying his jersey.

It’s been a remarkable turnaround for Awoniyi since the Bundesliga resumed from the coronavirus break. The 22-year-old is currently on loan at Mainz from Liverpool, but the 05ers were considering ending it early.

However, following the restart, Awoniyi has enjoyed some sort of redemption and Mainz are considering buying him outrightly from Liverpool.
