The Everton star made his debut for Nigeria under the management of coach Sunday Oliseh but has earned the majority of his 40 caps under the German tactician
Nigeria international Alex Iwobi has expressed his delight that Gernot Rohr has extended his contract as coach of the Super Eagles, hailing the development as the move in the right direction for the team.
Soccernet.ng earlier reported the former Gabon coach’s pleasure at inking a new deal with the three-time African champions.
The President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick, confirmed the deal on Wednesday with Rohr charged with winning the next edition of the African Cup of Nations.
Iwobi, one of Rohr’s crucial creative midfielders in the Super Eagles, says extending the contract of the former Bordeaux manager is a welcome development.
“I really enjoy playing under him (Rohr), hopefully, there will be more to come,” the former Arsenal star said in an Instagram Live.
“First of all, the team, the results speak for itself, I guess because we are blossoming very well as a team, we are getting the results as good as we can.
“For him to sign an extension is good news.”
The Super Eagles have one of the youngest national senior teams in the world, with the likes of Samuel Chukwueze, Victor Osimhen, and Wilfred Ndidi – all 23 or under – growing to become the pillars of the squad.
Rohr is giving chances to more talented youngsters coming through, and Iwobi insists this portends a bright future for the national side.
“The way Gernot Rohr tells us to humble ourselves and come with the right mentality, all good to him. Nigeria, we are good enough to compete to try and win tournaments.
“At the end of the day, you are in the tournaments to try and win. Now we are very confident, with the young talents coming through it’s very exciting times for the future.”
