Top South Africa Premier League side Kaizer Chiefs have rewarded Daniel Akpeyi with a new two-year contract extension to keep him in the fold of the Amakhosi until 2022.
Following his superb recent form and his promotion to Chiefs new No 1 ahead of previous first choice, Itumeleng Khune, Akpeyi has earned himself a new contract with the league leaders.
“Daniel Akpeyi, who joined Chiefs in January 2019 has earned himself a two-year contract extension to June 2022,” Chiefs wrote on their official website.
The 33-year-old was signed in January 2019 after Khune suffered a serious shoulder injury.
A remarkable year saw the former Heartland FC goalkeeper shine in the colours of club and country. Akpeyi stood in goal as the Super Eagles finished third at the African Cup of Nations finals in Egypt.
He was then named the best player in the Absa Premiership for September and October after his fantastic displays helped the Amakhosi maintained their hold at the top of the South African league.
An incredible 2019 then ended with Akpeyi voted as Nigeria’s Goalkeeper Of the Year at the Ballers Award.
Akpeyi has featured in 18 games in all competitions for Chiefs in the 2019-20 season, making 16 league appearances and two in the Telkom Knockout Cup. He is hoping to lead the Amakhosi to their first Absa Premiership title since 2015.
Long-time leaders Chiefs remain top of the league standings with 45 points after 19 matches, and they are ten-points ahead of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns.
