Mikel Obi In Race For Chelsea’s Team Of The Decade

Retired Nigeria international Mikel Obi has been named in the large group of players shortlisted for the finest first eleven to feature for the Blues in the last ten years.

Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel is on the 11-man shortlist for the best midfield trio for the Londoners as Chelsea put together the club’s team of the decade.

In the period under review – between 2010 and 2019 – the Stamford Bridge giants won three Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Europa League twice, the FA Cup three times and the League Cup once.

Mikel, who now stars for Trabzonspor in the Turkish Super Liga, was part of the Blues team that claimed two of those Premier League titles, one FA Cup, one UEFA Europa League and the prestigious UEFA Champions League.

It would still be a difficult hurdle for the highly decorated 32-year-old to be included in the Blues’ best midfield trio as he is up against ten others including current Chelsea manager Frank Lampard, former Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas and 2006 BBC Africa Footballer of the Year, Michael Essien.

Others are N’Golo Kante, Ramires, Oscar, Jorginho, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Mateo Kovacic and Nemanja Matic.

Mikel made over 300 appearances for the Blues, scoring six goals. He left Chelsea in 2017 to join Chinese League side, Tianjin Teda.
