Real Madrid have completed the signing of Alphonse Areola from Paris Saint Germain (PSG) on Monday’s deadline day transfer window.
Areola has been PSG’s first choice ‘keeper for the last two seasons, but will now provide competition for Thibaut Courtois at Madrid. The Belgian goalkeeper has not been convincing enough for team’s manager, Zinedine Zidane, which prompted his move for a second choice goalkeeper.
The France international has earned a reputation as one of Ligue 1’s most dependable keepers. Last season he was in regular competition for a starting spot with Gianluigi Buffon, who has since departed to return to Juventus.
Real confirmed Areola’s arrival, with their statement saying: “Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have reached an agreement for the transfer of player Keylor Navas. The club would like to show their appreciation and love for his behavior and his delivery in the five seasons he has appeared in the Real Madrid shirt.”
French football journalist Jeremy Smith said he rates the 26-year-old, although he believes PSG are getting a good deal in Navas from Real Madrid.
Madrid, meanwhile, have splashed out over £300m on the likes of Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic and Eder Militao, and will be relieved to have a permanent number two in before the close of the window.
