The Chelsea boss is not surprised that his star striker is desperately wanted by Nigeria as he believes that the 21-year-old is good enough to play international football.
Frank Lampard has hinted that England may miss out on Tammy Abraham if the Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate continues to ignore the in-form striker as Nigeria are ready to pounce if presented the chance, Soccernet.ng reports.
Abraham has banged in seven goals in his last three games to sit pretty at the top of the Premier League goalscorer’s chart. After grabbing his first Chelsea hat trick at Wolves over the weekend, the youngster revealed he was open to playing for the Super Eagles.
When asked of the possibility of England missing out on Abraham, Lampard warned that Tammy will continue to be wanted even if South gate refuses to draft him into the England set up.
Lampard said: “That’s not a question for me. He’s put himself in the bracket for England by being top goalscorer at this point.
“It’s one for Gareth [Southgate]; I’d hate to step on his toes. But it’s clear Tammy is going to be wanted.”
The Blues boss however expressed his delight at the 21-year-old’s fruitful run of form and is convinced the young man can improve even more as he is in the right place for his development.
“I never had clear expectations for him, only the fact that I believed in him and trusted him,” said the Chelsea boss.
“I know a lot has been made of the ban, giving young players potential opportunities, but I felt the time was right for Tammy to have his opportunity at this club anyway, because of the quality he has got.
“I’m really delighted he has got his goals, I think there’s even more to come. He’s in a good place that requires him to sustain and improve even more. With his mentality I hope to see that.”
