The Super Eagles continued their quest for a place at the
2018 World Cup as the team defeated the Desert Foxes of Algeria 3-1 at
the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Saturday.
Victor Moses opened the floodgate of goals in the 26th
minute with a low shot pass Algeria goalkeeper, Rais M’Bolhi before
Mikel Obi gave the team a comfortable lead in the 42nd minute having
controlled possession for most part of the encounter.
However, after the interval, the Desert Foxes reduced the scoreline as Nabil Bentaleb netted from 22-yard in the 67th minute.
All effort to get the scoreline leveled proved abortive as
Moses grabbed his brace with a superb finish in the 90th minute to seal
all three points for the Super Eagles.
The victory extends Nigeria’s lead on the log with six
points; five points ahead of Algeria and four points better of Cameroon
who played a 1-1 draw against Zambia in Yaounde.
It also maintains Super Eagles Technical adviser, Genort
Rohr’s 100% winning record since taking over the reign, having beaten
Tanzania and Zambia previously.
The three-time Africa champions will next face the
Indomitable Lions of Cameroon on August 28, 2017 at the Godswill Akpabio
Stadium.
