Super Eagles striker Obafemi Akinwunmi Martins has joined Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua in a multi-million deal.
31-year-old Martins joined MLS side Seattle Sounders in March 2013 and went on to score 43 goals in 83 appearances for the club. The former Inter Milan, Newcastle United, Birmimgham and Levante star, who has scored 18 goals in 41 appearances for Nigeria and was named Africa’s most promising talent in 2003 and 2004, was linked with a return to English Premier League but British agent Tony Harris along with the player’s attorney Soroosh Abdi brokered the deal taking him to China.
According to report, Obagoal becomes the latest high-profile player to make the switch to the cash-rich Chinese Super League and will link up with Senegalese striker Demba Ba at his new club. Martins joins other stars like Ramires, Jackson Martinez, Cameroon captain Stephane Mbia and former Arsenal, Freddy Guarin, Alex Teixeira and AS Roma star Gervinho in China.
