La Liga has started for the two biggest football teams and two greatest players in the world as Barcelona take an early 2-point lead over Los Blancos
Barcelona and Real Madrid played their first games of the 2015-2016 Liga season on Sunday evening with away trips to Athletic Bilbao and Sporting Gijon respectively, but they returned home with different results.
Barcelona took on Athletic Bilbao two hours earlier than Real’s game and got a slim 1-0 victory, thanks to a Luis Suarez second half volley.
The Catalans were favourites for the tie, seeking revenge for their Super Cup loss but didn’t find it easy at the San Mames. Lionel Messi saw a first half penalty saved but Luis Suarez was on hand to cover up his blushes firing home a volley on the 54th minute.
Real Madrid went against Sporting Gijon at El Molinas two hours later. Many pundits predicted a thrashing for Real Madrid but the outcome of the game was a surprising 0-0 draw.
Real Madrid players lacked flow in the game with Cristiano Ronaldo unlucky, missing two great chances in a game that saw Luka Modric shine and Mateo Kovacic make his debut.
The draw means Los Blancos are two points behind champions Barcelona and Atletico Madrid who also got a 1-0 win over Las Palmas on Saturday.
Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo

Lionel Messi came closest to score for Barça after being presented with a glorious chance from the penalty spot on 31 minutes. However, the Argentine saw his tame effort parried away by the determined Gorka Iraizoz.
Cristiano Ronaldo also fired blank for Real Madrid despite coming close on numerous occasions. His missed header from 3 yards out in the second half was the highlight of the game. Tested the keeper well but couldn’t get the goal.
Overall, both players were average both Lionel Messi had a better performance. It was the first time since 2013 that both players failed to score whilst playing on the same day. Wow!
