Nigeria’s remaining representative on the
continent, Warri Wolves is expected to depart for Congo Brazzaville on Thursday
to keep a date with AS Leopards in the play-off of the Confederation Cup. It is
the last round before the group stage of the competition proper.

The match which is the first leg of
the tie will be played in the Congolese city of Dolisie.
The Seasiders will be without Super
Eagles striker Gbolahan Salami who is suspended for the match.
The Warri City Stadium outfit warmed
up for the match with a convincing 4-1 home win over Nasarawa United in week 8
of the Nigerian Premier League.
Paul Aigbogun’s side has been very
impressive in the Confederation Cup this season. They have played six matches,
winning five and drawing the other. There were away wins at AK Etancheite of
the Congo Democratic Republic after a 72nd minute goal from Etebo Oghenekaro in
the last round, while there was a goalless draw against Ethiopia’s Dedebit in Addis Ababa.
Burkinabe’s Bobo-Dioulasso also fell
0-1 to Warri Wolves fire power in Burkina Faso.
The Nigerian Premier League side has
won all it home matches in the Confederation Cup scoring seven goals, while the
only goal they have conceded in the competition came at home to Etancheite in
the last round.
Warri Wolves will be coming against
a side that is familiar to Nigerian football followers. AS Leopards of Congo
Brazzaville was defeated by Egyptian club Smouha in the play-off round of the
Champions League. It was Smouha that sent one of Nigeria’s representatives in the
Champions League, Enyimba packing in the second round of the competition.
Warri Wolves have used an obdurate
style in their away matches in the Confederation Cup this season, keeping clean
sheets in all their three away matches so far.
And Super Eagles defender Azubuike
Egwuekwe will again be instrumental to any defensive display they would put up
in Congo after he played a
part in Warri Wolves coming away with another clean sheet in their last trip to
Kinshasa.
The Seasiders will arrive Dolisie
via the Ethiopian capital of Addis
Ababa on Thursday.
