Nigerian U23 dream team midfielder,
Alex Iwobi scored his 10th goal of the season when he restored Arsenal’s lead
over Bolton U21s in a match played in the North-West of England in continuation
of U21 Premier League on Monday.
Alex Iwobi who is the nephew of
Super Eagles legend, Jay Jay Okocha has been in sparkling form for Steve
Gatting’s team this season. The captain of the youth side showed his qualities
once again as he led Arsenal U21s to back-to-back wins.
The Arsenal U21s who have since
missed out on promotion to the top division of the U21 Premier League after an
unstable season are seeking to finish the season in a flourish, and Alex Iwobi
has been instrumental to that. He scored in the win over Brighton
in the last match the team played. And he was at it again on Monday.
Arsenal opened the scoring through
Ormonde-Ottewell in the opening ten minutes, but Bolton
equalised. Yet Alex Iwobi was on the fore once again when he restored Arsenal’s
lead before half time. German winger, Serge Gnabry added a third goal to give
the team a 3-1 win.
Alex Iwobi has enjoyed one of his
best seasons yet with the Arsenal youth team since he came through the club’s
academy. From the way he has developed so far, he is primed for a loan spell
away from the club next season.
From a Nigerian perspective, he was
invited to the U23 dream team camp in February ahead of the All African Games
qualifiers against Gabon.
However, he could not feature in the match as the NFF did not get clearance
from FIFA to confirm his nationality switch from England
to Nigeria.
Prior to his pledge to play for Nigeria, he had
featured for the England U16, U17 and U18 sides.
With the All African Games coming up
in September, he could be part of Samson Siasia’s team or the Olympic Games
qualifiers for the Rio Olympics.
