There
were exciting matches played on Saturday in the English Premier League which
had several Nigerian interests. While there was ecstasy for Victor Anichebe who
scored for West Brom. However, Sone Aluko’s Hull City
lost at home to slip into the relegation zone.
Newcastle United 1, West Brom 1
Venue: St James Park
Victor Anichebe 32’, Ayore Perez 41’
Newcastle United came into the match
against West Brom on the back of eight
straight defeats that has left them in a relegation dog fight. While West Brom arrived St James Park on the back of a moral
boosting 0-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford. Sammy Ameobi and Brown
Ideye were on the bench for Newcastle United and West Brom
respectively. Victor Anichebe was in Tony Pulis’ starting lineup. It was the
Beijing 2008 Olympic silver medalist that opened the scoring for West Brom in the 32 minute as he slotted into the net. As
the match became stretched, Ayore Perez equalised for the Magpies 4 minutes
before half time. Anichebe was substituted in the 78th minute. Sammy Ameobi
came into the fray for Newcastle United for goal scorer Perez in the 85th
minute, while Brown Ideye was an unused substitute.
West Brom remain comfortably in 13th position
on 41 points, while Newcastle United are just 2 points off the final relegation
zone in 17th position on 36 points.
 Hull City 0, Burnley 1
 Venue: KC Stadium
 Danny Ings 62’
Sone Aluko could not save Hull City
as they slumped to a second home loss in five days after Monday’s 1-3 defeat to
Arsenal. The Super Eagles winger was on from the start, but it was Burnley’s
Danny Ings who scored his 10th league goal of the season from a corner for Sean Dyche’s Burnley in the second half when Hull City defender Micheal Dawson was off the field . Aluko was withdrawn in the 66
minute for striker Hernandez. But it was Robbie Brady who came closest to scoring for Hull City
as he struck the woodwork twice. Steve Bruce’s side remains in a precarious
position in the league.
Despite the win, Burnley have been
relegated to the Championship, while Hull
City remain in danger of
being relegated as they lie in 18th position with 34 points.
Stoke City 3, Tottenham Hotspur 0
Venue: Britannia Stadium
Charlie Adam 21’, Steven Nzonzi 32’, Mame Diouf 86’
Osazee Odemwingie was a 83rd minute
substitute for Jonny Walters as Stoke
City comfortably defeated
Tottenham Hotspur at the Britannia Stadium. The win move Mark Hughes’ side to a record 50 points for the first time in the Premier League as they remain
in 9th position. Osazee Odemwingie was a doubt for the match after missing a
reserve game on Monday. But he managed to shrug off the knock to play a part
in the win as he continues his comeback from his eight months injury layoff.
