Take Shooting Stars’ 2-1 win over Kano Pillars. Say you backed Shooting Stars at -1.5, they would have needed to win by at least two goals. They won by one, so the handicap bet would have lost. A Kano Pillars +1.5 bet would have won, even though Pillars lost the match.

In handicap markets, the weaker side carries a positive symbol (+), while the stronger one gets a negative (-). It’s a concept similar to spread betting, though spreads are far more common in basketball and American football than in football.

Now, for betting in Nigeria, you’ll often come across two main formats: European Handicap and Asian Handicap. Both follow the same principle but differ in how they handle draws and half-goal margins.

Asian Handicap in Betting

With the Asian Handicap, there is no possibility of a draw; it's either a win or a loss. The bookmaker splits the handicap into multiples of full, half and quarter goals. This gives options like +0.25, -0.5, -0.75, or +1.0.

Now, if there is a draw after adjusting the scoreline with the handicap, the bet will be counted as a push. In this case, the bookmaker will refund half or your full stake, but this depends on the bet.

With a full goal (0.0, 1.0, 2.0, or 3.0), you win your stake if the adjusted score ends in a draw. Quarter goals (0.25, 0.75, 1.25, or 1.75) result in either a half-win or half-lose on draws. This means you get half of your stake back.

European Handicap

A European handicap is a three-way football betting market. The bookmaker adds or subtracts a whole number of goals, such as +1 or -2, before settling the bet. You then choose one of three outcomes: home win, handicap draw or away win.

An example: Remo Stars beat Kano Pillars 2-0. Here is how different European goal handicap selections would have settled:

Note: the handicap draw is the detail to watch. At -2, Remo Stars’ two-goal win becomes a draw after the handicap is applied. A bet on Remo Stars -2 loses, while a bet on the handicap draw wins. A European handicap bet is not refunded when the adjusted score is level, because the draw is a separate selection you could have backed.

Examples of Handicap Betting

For our example, we'll use an EPL match where Manchester City beat Ipswich Town 4-1. City won by three goals. The handicap lines below are examples of how bets on that result would settle, not a record of the odds offered before the match.

European Handicap Example: Manchester City vs Ipswich Town

A European handicap has three possible selections: City, the handicap draw or Ipswich. If you select Manchester City -3, subtract three goals from City’s final score. Their 4-1 win becomes an adjusted 1-1 draw.

This is why the winning margin matters in football handicap betting. City covered a -2 goal handicap because they won by three. They did not cover -3: after the adjustment, neither team was ahead.

Asian Handicap Example: Manchester City vs Ipswich Town

Now apply the same 4-1 result to a two-way Asian handicap. There is no handicap-draw selection. On a whole-goal line, an adjusted draw returns your stake.

The -3 handicap is the comparison to watch here: City’s three-goal winning margin produces an adjusted draw in both formats. A European bet on City -3 loses because the handicap draw wins. An Asian bet on City -3.0 is refunded. The -3.5 line has no refund outcome: City would have needed to win by at least four goals to cover it.

How Do You Win a Handicap Bet?

To win a handicap bet, your favoured team must overturn the disadvantage or maintain the advantage the bookie has given before the start of the game. I will explain how this works using a UCL match between Real Madrid and Arsenal.

1. Arsenal (+1) or (0:1)

Arsenal have a goal advantage at the start of the game, so

• If Arsenal win, you win the bet.
• If the game ends in a draw, you win the bet.
• If Arsenal lose, you lose the bet.

2. Real Madrid (-1) or (1:0)

To calculate a football handicap bet, check which team receives the goals, apply them to the final score, then settle the adjusted result according to the market shown on your bet slip.

1. Read the Handicap and Your Selection

A +2 goal handicap adds two goals to the selected team’s score. A -2 handicap subtracts two goals. Some Nigerian bookmakers display the same idea as a starting score: 0:2 means the away team receives a two-goal head start, while 2:0 gives it to the home team.

This is the meaning of a handicap in football betting: City’s real three-goal win stays on the record, but each line produces a different result for the bet. A 0:2 handicap does not mean the match must finish 0-2. It means the away team starts with two virtual goals.

3. Special Cases of Half Handicaps (0.0, +0.5, -0.5)

A 0.0 handicap adds no goals. In a two-way Asian market, it works like Draw No Bet: a win pays, a loss loses, and a match draw returns your stake. A +0.5 handicap gives your team half a goal, so a real draw becomes a winning handicap bet. At -0.5, your team must win the match. Neither half-goal line can finish level after adjustment, so neither produces a refund.

Before placing the bet, check the market name as well as the number. On a whole-goal line such as City -3, the 4-4 adjusted score would refund a two-way Asian bet. In a three-way European market, the handicap draw would win instead.

You have better chances of winning handicap bets when you depend on statistics, such as recent form, injuries, and previous encounters. If Barcelona has won 60% of their matches in a season by at least a 2-goal margin and Alaves has a leaky defence, a -1 or -2 handicap bet might be a good option.

That distinction matters most in a one-sided fixture. If a favourite is very likely to win, the ordinary match-winner odds offer little return.
