“Fought for the badge” – Zimbabwe FA President pleased with result against Super Eagles

President of the Zimbabwe Football Association, Nqobile Magwizi, was delighted with the fighting spirit the Warriors put on display in their 1-1 draw against the Super Eagles of Nigeria on Tuesday, Soccernet.ng reports.

Michael Nees’ side were the underdogs heading into the clash at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, and sat deep for most of the game.

Victor Osimhen broke the deadlock in the 74th, but the Warriors roared back almost immediately, hitting the cross bar before their eventual equaliser came in the 87th minute through Tawada Chidera.

The ZIFA president commended the players and technical team for their effort, adding that the result is a testament to the progress Zimbabwean football is making on the international stage. Despite being bottom of the group, their president believes qualification is possible.

“Every player fought for the badge, and this performance gives us confidence as we continue our World Cup qualification journey and preparations for Morocco 2025,” Maqwizi said in quotes revealed by Pindula.

Practically, directly qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is nearly out of reach. For such to happen, South Africa will need to lose at least two games, while the rest of the team claim six points.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers continue in September for the Super Eagles where they take on Rwanda and South Africa.
