Super Eagles forward Moses Simon scored for Nantes, but his goal was cancelled by a late strike from Augustine Boakye which ensured that Saint Etienne forced a 1-1 draw at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard on Sunday, Soccernet.ng reports.
Simon is having one of his best seasons in a Nantes shirt, as he has been involved in almost half of their goals in the Ligue 1 this season.
He maintained his place in the starting eleven when they traveled to Saint Etienne for their 18th league game of the campaign.
The visiting Yellow Canaries were quite conservative in their approach, as the plan was to sit back and catch Saint Etienne on the counter. It took them just 14 minutes for their setup to pay off.
Simon capitalized on a defensive mix-up in front of St Etienne’s box, as he picked up a botched clearance, ran towards goal, and struck a wicked piledriver into the net to make it 1-0 to his side.
After Nantes scored, they were just content to sit back and defend their lead. They did that well until the 86th minute, when Boakye scored for Saint Etienne to force a 1-1 draw.
That result ensured that Nantes will remain 15th in the Ligue 1, while Saint Etienne have drifted into the relegation zone in 16th.
Simon now has five goals and five assists in Ligue 1 this season. He will have to keep scoring and assisting for Nantes to avoid relegation.
