Swiss giants FC Basel have finalised a loan deal for Nigerian winger Philip Otele from UAE side Al Wahda, with an option to buy for €3 million, including a sell-on clause, Soccernet.ng understands.
Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the agreement, stating on his X handle:
“Excl: FC Basel have agreed deal to sign 25-year-old Nigerian winger Philip Otele from Al Wahda. Loan with option to buy for €3m plus sell-on clause, medical on Tuesday.”
Otele is expected to undergo his medical before being officially unveiled as a Basel player.
The move provides a fresh start for Otele, who has struggled for consistent game time at Al Wahda in the United Arab Emirates.
After beginning the season as a starter in four consecutive Pro League matches, he was relegated to a bench role, often introduced late in games. In 12 appearances across all competitions this season, the winger has failed to find the back of the net.
However, the 25-year-old’s pedigree remains unquestionable.
Otele’s breakthrough came at CFR Cluj, where he emerged as Liga I’s joint-top scorer in the 2023-24 season, netting 18 goals and sharing the Golden Boot with FCSB’s Florinel Coman.
That stellar campaign drew interest from Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion, who reportedly considered a £6 million bid.
Basel, currently second in the Swiss Super League, aim to revitalise their squad after finishing ninth last season. The 20-time Swiss champions are keen to reclaim the league title, which they last won in 2017.
For Otele, the loan represents a chance to reignite his career in Europe’s competitive environment. Basel will hope the Nigerian can replicate the form he displayed at CFR Cluj and Lithuanian club Kauno Žalgiris, where he impressed with 10 goals during the 2021 campaign.
Born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Otele began his professional journey in England’s lower leagues with Wolviston FC before embarking on a successful stint in Lithuania.
