Dessers exit looms as two Serie A clubs enquire about Rangers striker

Two Italian Serie A clubs have enquired about the possibility of a January move from Rangers for Super Eagles striker, Cyriel Kolawole Dessers, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Nigerian has fallen down the pecking order under Philippe Clement with Moroccan striker, Hamza Igamane, taking his place as the first-choice striker while the Brazilian Danilo either partners with his colleague or comes from the bench. Still, he’s ahead of Dessers regarding Rangers’ striking options from the bench.

Dessers’, in his time at Hampden Park, has blown hot and cold. His commitment to the team cannot be questioned, neither can his work rate, but his finishing just doesn’t cut it.

At 30, the former Feyenoord man is nearing the end of his career and needs to play as many games as possible while he’s still at the peak of his physical strength.

As per Sky Sport Italia, a return to the Serie A could be on the cards for the Rangers striker, with Cagliari and Empoli interested in Dessers.

Dessers played for Cremonese just before he joined Rangers in 2023, and his familiarity with the Italian environment could prove to be an edge for the Serie A clubs keen on his services, as they face stiff competition from French Ligue 1 side, AS-Saint Etienne.

The 30-year-old has scored 34 goals and provided 13 assists in 84 games for the Gers. While the numbers he’s put up are impressive, the Belgium-born Super Eagle gets a lot of stick because he should have scored more.

While his preferred option is currently unknown, it is widely tipped that Dessers’ exit from Rangers will be a loan deal with an option to buy at the end of the season included.

Cagliari and Empoli are 17th and 12th on the Serie A table respectively, and it is currently unknown if he’ll prefer to ditch European football to join relegation-threatened Italian teams in search of more playing time.
