Super Falcons star honoured in Spain after missing out on CAF Best Player award

Super Falcons star Rasheedat Ajibade has been recognised with the prestigious Hyundai Sports Values Trophy at the IV European Women’s Football Gala in Spain, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Atlético de Madrid forward was celebrated for her off-field impact, particularly her work through the Rasheedat Ajibade Foundation, which focuses on empowering disadvantaged girls.

The Hyundai trophy, awarded to individuals or initiatives that stand out beyond the football pitch, highlights Ajibade’s growing influence.

Lola Romero, general manager of Atlético de Madrid’s women’s team, accepted the award on Ajibade’s behalf, as the player was absent due to a back injury.

“‘Rash’ deserves the award for the work she does with disadvantaged girls, and I will read a text that she passed on to me,” said Romero as per Mundo Deportivo.

“I am especially grateful for this recognition. It is inspiring to know that our efforts are being recognised. I hope this award inspires many in the fight for a more equitable world.”

Ajibade’s journey to stardom has been nothing short of inspirational. From playing football on the streets of Nigeria at age six to overcoming societal barriers, she has become a role model for aspiring African girls.

In addition to her on-pitch excellence, she champions the fight against racism. She is a prominent member of the FIFPRO World Footballers’ Council, pushing for better opportunities for women’s football in Africa.

While Ajibade was being celebrated in Spain, she was overlooked at the CAF Awards on the same evening.

Zambian international Barbra Banda was crowned Africa Women’s Player of the Year, despite Ajibade’s stellar performances for club and country.

The 25-year-old, named Atlético Madrid’s Player of the Season for 2023/24, had also captained Nigeria to qualification for the Paris Olympics.

Nonetheless, it was not a completely disappointing night for Ajibade at the CAF Awards, as she joined three other Super Falcons players in the FIFPro Best XI.

Alongside her were defenders Osinachi Ohale and Michelle Alozie, as well as legendary forward Asisat Oshoala.
