Cercle Brugge midfielder Lawrence Agyekum has expressed his keen interest in representing Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Soccernet.ng reports.
Agyekum, 20, who plays for Red Bull Salzburg in Austria’s Bundesliga, is on loan to Cercle Brugge in the Belgian Pro League.
Born to a Ghanaian father and Nigerian mother, Agyekum holds dual nationality, presenting a unique opportunity in his football career.
In a chat with OGN as per Ghana Soccernet, Agyekum affirmed his eligibility and enthusiasm for a potential call-up to the Super Eagles, despite being registered as a Ghanaian player.
“My father is from Ghana but my mother is Nigerian. I can play for both nations. That’s one part that people don’t know about me and if the chance to play for Super Eagles comes, I won’t say no,” Agyekum stated.
He further expressed his admiration for both countries’ football teams, stating,
“I have love for both countries and want to see them do well. Not too good for Ghana in the AFCON qualifiers but they are doing well in the World Cup qualifiers. For Nigeria, the reverse is the case. I follow both closely.”
Lawrence Agyekum began his career with the West African Football Academy in Ghana before moving to Red Bull Salzburg in 2022.
His loan spell at Cercle Brugge has been productive, featuring prominently in both domestic and European competitions.
Agyekum’s stint at Cercle Brugge has seen him play 13 matches, including four appearances in the Europa League, showcasing his growing experience and talent on the European stage.
