Ademola Lookman
As the CAF Africa Player of the Year awards approach, former Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has voiced his strong support for Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman to secure the prestigious honour, Soccernet.ng reports.
Lookman, who has dazzled both for club and country this season, is viewed by Onazi as Africa’s finest football talent, worthy of the continent’s highest individual accolade.
Lookman’s credentials are compelling.
The 27-year-old winger was instrumental in Nigeria’s campaign at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, scoring three goals and providing an assist to help the Super Eagles reach the final. His impressive tally made him Nigeria’s most productive player at the tournament.
At club level, Lookman delivered one of the season’s most unforgettable performances, leading Atalanta to the Europa League final.
In a historic display against Bayer Leverkusen, Lookman netted three goals – marking the first time an African player scored a hat-trick in a European final – and secured Atalanta’s maiden Europa League title.
The Nigerian star’s efforts did not go unnoticed.
Lookman was the only African nominated for the Ballon d’Or and ultimately ranked 14th globally and second best in Serie A – a remarkable feat that further validates his CAF nomination.
Ogenyi Onazi, reflecting on Lookman’s achievements, believes the forward has earned his place at the top of African football.
“Lookman is an exceptional talent. His hard work, commitment, and discipline set him apart. I am thrilled with his achievements and his nomination for the Ballon d’Or, which is a testament to his quality,” Onazi told Brila.net.
“CAF should prepare the trophy for him; it’s not just about him being Nigerian, but because he truly is the finest player in Africa right now. His performance last season was phenomenal, and he deserves every recognition he gets.”
In the run-up to the CAF awards, set for a grand ceremony in Marrakech, Lookman leads a shortlist packed with talented contenders, including Achraf Hakimi (Morocco/PSG), Serhou Guirassy (Guinea/Borussia Dortmund), Amine Gouiri (Algeria/Rennes), and several other African stars.
Despite the fierce competition, Onazi believes Lookman’s season-long brilliance sets him apart.
“I would be quite disappointed if he doesn’t take home the award because there is simply no reasonable argument against it,” added Onazi.
Lookman has continued his form this season, contributing an impressive 10 goal involvements in as many games.
