Former Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, has opened up about the key factors behind his departure from the Nigerian national team, Soccernet.ng reports.
Peseiro, who led Nigeria to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations where they finished as runners-up, chose to step down after his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) expired.
Despite efforts by the NFF and Nigeria’s Sports Minister, John Enoh, to retain him, the Portuguese coach’s salary demands were reportedly beyond what the federation could afford.
In an interview with SABC, Peseiro highlighted the overwhelming pressure and stress that came with managing the national team as major reasons for his exit.
“There was too much stress,” Peseiro explained. “I had the support of my staff and the best from my players, but it wasn’t enough. I wanted to win the AFCON for the fans, the government, for everyone, but even before the tournament, I had already decided to leave. Even if I had won the trophy, I would have still left.”
Peseiro’s departure ushered in a brief stint for Finidi George, but the former Nigerian international resigned after less than two months, citing a lack of support from the NFF.
Since then, the Super Eagles have been without a permanent head coach, with NFF Technical Director Augustine Eguavoen stepping in as interim manager.
Under the former KAA Gent defender, the Eagles secured a commanding 3-0 win against Benin in Uyo and later earned a draw against Rwanda in Kigali.
