Turkish Super Lig side, Trabzonspor, have rekindled their interest in Super Eagles and Southampton striker, Paul Onuachu, Soccernet.ng reports.
Onuachu spent last season on loan with Abdullah Avcı’s side, scoring 17 goals and providing four assists and was keen on making his stay in Turkey a permanent one.
Trabzonspor made several offers to Southampton in a bid to secure the services of the 29-year-old Nigerian attacker, but none of them were up to the nine million euros Martin Russell’s side wanted.
Turning their attention away from Onuachu, Trabzonspor went after former Manchester United striker, Wout Weghorst, but they were unable to convince the Burnley striker to make a switch to Turkey, as reported by Sports Witness UK. It could also be because Ajax are keen on the 32-year-old.
As per Turkish outlet, Sabah, Trabzonspor have made it their priority to get a deal done for Onuachu and are preparing to hold subsequent talks with Southampton over a final offer that’ll settle the transfer saga.
Southampton have already rejected an offer of €7m, plus €2m add-ons from the Trabzon club and it’s hoped a middle ground can be found during these meetings.
Abdullah Avcı’s side have been woeful in front of goal so far this season, scoring just one goal in their last three games and are desperate for a permanent fix. Their alternative signing, Romanian Denis Dragus has scored just once in four outings.
It is reported that Southampton are open to further discussions about Onuachu, who is not a clear favourite in Russell’s plans for the season and a move away will be best for all parties involved. The 2.02m tall striker didn’t feature in any of The Saints’ pre-season games.
