I owe a lot to Lookman – Gasperini laments Super Eagles star’s link to PSG

Atalanta head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has expressed deep concerns over the possible departure of Ademola Lookman, as the Super Eagles forward continues to be heavily linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Nigerian star has become a hot topic in the transfer market after catching the eye of the Parisians, who have reportedly made a verbal offer to secure his services.

However, Atalanta rejected PSG’s initial €30 million bid, which further stamps their determination to retain the talented attacker at Bergamo.

Meanwhile, reports from both local and Italian media suggest that Lookman, who was a key figure in Nigeria’s AFCON 2023 triumph, has requested to be excluded from Atalanta’s first Serie A match of the season. This move has fueled speculation that the forward may be preparing for an imminent exit.

Gasperini, who has relied heavily on Lookman’s contributions, expressed his deep appreciation for the Nigerian star, acknowledging the significant impact he has had on the team’s recent success. In an interview with DAZN, as quoted by Tutto Atalanta, the Atalanta boss lamented the timing of the transfer saga.

“I owe a lot to Koopmeiners and Lookman; they have always been sincere with me. It’s unfortunate that this situation arises just as the season is starting. The worst part is that these issues surface when the championship is already underway. No one likes dealing with these distractions at this stage. If this had happened in July, it wouldn’t have caused such problems,” Gasperini said.

He continued, “Football is a sport of entertainment and spectacle, and we owe it to the fans to put on a show. It’s madness that these situations are still allowed to unfold in this manner. Ideally, all teams should have their squads settled before the season begins, so fans know exactly who they’re supporting from the start. This whole scenario is truly bizarre.”

PSG are expected to return with an improved offer in a bid to secure Lookman’s signature. The Red and Blue will need to act swiftly if they hope to convince Atalanta to part with one of their most prized assets.
