Report: Chidozie Awaziem joins Nwobodo at FC Cincinnati from Boavista

Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has completed his transfer from Boavista to FC Cincinnati, where he will join compatriot Obinna Nwobodo, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Orange and Blue had previously expressed strong interest in the Nigerian center-back and were in advanced discussions to secure his services during the summer transfer window.

The former FC Porto defender was a vital player for Boavista during their 2023-24 Liga Portugal campaign, contributing one assist in 24 appearances which piqued their interest.

According to Major League Soccer reporter Tom Bogert, the deal has now been finalized, confirming that Awaziem will be joining the USA-based club.

FC Cincinnati’s official reporter, Pat Brennan, further corroborated this, noting that Awaziem will replace United States Men’s National Team defender Matt Miazga, who is currently sidelined with an injury.

Awaziem’s arrival bolsters Cincinnati’s defensive lineup and reunites him with fellow Super Eagles star Nwobodo, whose contract with the club runs until 2025.

This move would see Awaziem leave his fellow countrymen, Ibrahim Alhassan and Bruno Onyemeachi, at Estádio do Bessa, ending his time in Portugal since 2014.

Earlier reports from Soccernet.ng reveals that Boavista FC acquired Nigerian midfielder Alhassan from Belgian club Beerschot VA.

The former Nigeria youth international, signed a two-year contract that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2025-26 season.
