Nigeria U20 face Australia and Mexico in Colombia; Super Falcons leave Spain for France

Falconets to Play Australia and Mexico in Colombia

The Nigeria U-20 women’s national team, known as the Falconets, will face Australia and Mexico in friendly matches as they prepare for the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, Soccernet.ng reports.

These warmup games are scheduled to be held in Colombia next month, where the final phase of the team’s training camp will take place.

The Falconets began their World Cup preparations in Abuja two weeks ago. The squad currently consists of 32 players, all competing for a spot on the final team roster.

Nigeria have been drawn into a challenging group that includes three-time champions Germany, Venezuela, and Korea.

The friendly matches against Australia and Mexico are crucial for the Falconets as they will help the team fine-tune their strategies and assess their readiness for the tournament.

Super Falcons Arrive in Bordeaux Tonight

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s senior women’s football team, the Super Falcons, are set to arrive in Bordeaux, France tonight following the completion of their camping programme in Spain.

This marks the beginning of their final preparations for their first Olympic football tournament in 16 years.

The nine-time African champions will depart Spain on an Air France flight and are expected to land in Bordeaux just before 11 pm.

The delegation includes 18 players, four alternate players, and team officials. They are scheduled to arrive at their Hotel Mercure base shortly before midnight.

The Super Falcons last competed in the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament in 2008 in China, where they faced tough opponents like Korea DPR, Germany, and Brazil.

The Super Falcons made their Olympic debut in 2000 in Australia, competing against strong teams like China, Norway, and the United States.

The Super Falcons fell to a narrow 1-0 friendly defeat to Canada on Wednesday evening, ending their impressive 15-game unbeaten run in regulation time across all competitions.
