Italian-Swiss football administrator and FIFA president Gianni Infantino has sent a congratulatory message to Rangers FC of Enugu for their success in the Nigeria Premier Football League, Soccernet.ng reports.
Rangers International won the 2023–24 NPFL with one game to spare after beating Bendel Insurance 2-0 in their final home game of the season at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, before travelling to defeat Gombe United 2-1.
Infantino, who has led the World Football Body since 2016, took to his Instagram story to congratulate the Flying Antelopes.
“Congratulations Rangers International FC on being crowned 2023-24 champions of Nigeria,” he wrote, resharing an official image of Rangers.
Rangers claimed their eighth league title, marking their first triumph since 2016, in a dramatic match-day 37 that saw their rivals falter.
Key defeats for Remo Stars and Enyimba against Sunshine Stars and Sporting Lagos, respectively, played a crucial role in sealing the championship.
Under the guidance of Fidelis Ilechukwu, the team took an assertive approach in their match against Insurance. Kenechukwu Agu opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Chidiebere Nwobodo extended their lead in the 65th minute, putting them in a strong position.
Rangers will represent Nigeria in the forthcoming CAF Champions League, where they hope to have a great campaign, after their NPFL triumph.
