Confirmed: Canada-born striker of Nigerian origin joins Union Saint-Gilloise

With a statement on their official website, Belgian giants Union Saint-Gilloise have announced the signing of Canada-born Nigerian youngster Promise ‘Tobi’ David, Soccernet.ng reports.

David joins Union Saint-Gilloise on a three-year deal from Estonian club Kalju FC.

David, originally from Brampton, Ontario, Canada, began his football journey at Toronto FC’s academy. He has also played for Vaughan Azzurri in the Canadian League and had stints in Croatia, the United States, Malta, and Estonia.

Now in Brussels, David has signed a contract with Union Saint-Gilloise until 2027, with an option for an additional year.

David’s impressive performance in the Premium Liiga this year, with 14 goals and 3 assists, caught the attention of several European clubs. Union SG ultimately secured his signature, with the club paying a reported €500,000 to get the deal done – the highest transfer fee David has commanded in his career so far.

Union Saint-Gilloise has a history of nurturing Nigerian talent. They previously signed Victor Boniface from Bodø/Glimt for €6 million. Boniface scored 17 goals and provided 12 assists in 51 games before moving to Bayer Leverkusen for €22 million.

David, who stands at 1.95 meters tall and is skilled with both feet, will aim to make a similar impact in Belgium with his new team.

Union SG finished second in the Belgian Pro League during the recently concluded campaign, with the 11-time winners still searching for their first league title since 1935.
