West Ham United pick interest in Nottingham Forest Super Eagle’s star

Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker, Taiwo Michael Awoniyi, has emerged as a transfer target for West Ham United, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 26-year-old forward had a decent Premier League campaign with Nottingham Forest in the just concluded season, racking up six goals and three assists in 12 starts for the Reds.

The former Union Berlin forward was available for just 20 of Forest’s 38 league games, accruing 1,046 minutes of playing time due to a recurring groin injury that also saw him miss the AFCON 2023 tournament with the Super Eagles in Ivory Coast.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men narrowly avoided relegation from the English top-flight, with Luton Town’s loss on the final matchday confirming their safety.

As per West Ham Central, West Ham United are looking for a striker to rival Michail Antonio up-front, alongside a forward who can serve as strength in depth for the Hammers.

The Jamaican missed a core part of West Ham’s season, leaving Jarrod Bowen and Ghana’s Mohammed Kudus to shoulder the goalscoring responsibility. The pair combined to produce 36 games under David Moyes.

As the Julen Lopetegui era beckons, the 2022/2023 UEFA Conference League winners have identified Taiwo Awoniyi as the ideal player to provide the depth and clinicality they need in attack.

Soccernet.ng earlier reported that the former Mainz 05 striker is unclear about his future at the City Ground, hinting at the chance of a possible move in the summer.

Taiwo Awoniyi was not included in the Super Eagles team to face South Africa and Benin Republic in next month’s FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
