Trabzonspor is making a concerted effort to retain their Nigerian star striker, Paul Onuachu, who has delivered an outstanding performance this season, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Super Eagles attacker caught the interest of English Premier League side Southampton following a stellar stint with KRC Genk, eventually securing his signature for a fee of around €18 million.
However, he struggled to adapt to life in England, failing to score in all 12 of his appearances for the Saints, which led to a season-long loan move away from the club.
With the Black Sea Storm, the red-hot Onuachu has scored 17 goals and provided 4 assists in 25 official matches, catching the eye of Trabzonspor, who are keen to extend his stay in Trabzon.
In the summer, Trabzonspor secured the striker on loan for €1.5 million, covering his full salary. However, their subsequent proposal to extend the loan at the same rate was rejected by Southampton, who are holding out for a transfer fee of €15 million.
Undeterred, Trabzonspor has updated their offer, presenting a higher rental fee in hopes of convincing the English club to agree to another loan spell.
Reports indicate that the management of Trabzonspor is eagerly awaiting Southampton’s response to their improved bid.
The Super Eagles attacker has publicly declared his intention to stay with the Turkish side, revealing that his family also wants to remain there.
According to Kuzey Ekspres, the Nigerian international is making attempts to negotiate with his club to facilitate his stay.
Onuachu signed a three-year deal with Southampton during the January 2023 transfer window, with his contract set to expire in 2026.
New Super Eagles boss, Finidi George, has announced his 23-man squad to face South Africa and Benin Republic in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers slated for June.
The Southampton-owned striker’s impressive form has made him a key player for Trabzonspor and has also drawn the attention of Finidi, who has included him in his squad list.
Onuachu will compete for a starting XI spot with the likes of Victor Osimhen and Victor Boniface, and he hopes to deliver a good performance on the pitch if given the chance.
