Rangers boss gives positive update on Leon Balogun’s contract extension

Leon Balogun has struggled to break into the Rangers first team this season, spending most of his time on the bench.

Rangers boss, Philippe Clement, has given a hint of a possible contract extension for Super Eagles central defender, Leon Aderemi Balogun, Soccernet.ng reports.

The veteran centre-back, now 35 years old, joined the Scottish record Champions for a second spell from Queens Park Rangers, but the move hasn’t gone the way he planned.

The former Mainz 05 defender didn’t feature in the team for three months before he was recalled into the first-eleven in April, putting in a great performance in their 2-0 win over Hearts in the Scottish Cup semi-final.

He’s started every game for the Gers since then and is hoping for a contract extension as his current deal runs out in the summer. Rangers boss, Philippe Clement, praised the defender for his mentality and discussed a potential contract extension.

“Leon is somebody who showed every day the right mentality, the right passion for the club. So that can be something that is on the table at the end of the season, but it is the end of the season that we can make a really good evaluation about everything and everybody. It’s going to be a very interesting period in that way for us to make the right decisions for next season also,” the 50-year-old manager said in quotes revealed by the Scottish Sun.

For now, the Belgian coach is focused on putting his players in the best mind frame as they chase a domestic double.

“I think it’s now very important we have the next two weeks for the games, that the players are focused on football. If they are busy now with those things it would be a bad thing here. If it was two weeks ago and there was a decision we had time to talk about at that moment, now we need to put it on hold until the end of the season and put everything on these four games,” the manager added.

Balogun last played for the Super Eagles in their 10-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe in their AFCON qualifying campaign.
