Newly-promoted Turkish club Goztepe are set to challenge Trabzonspor for the signing of Super Eagles star Paul Onuachu, Soccernet.ng reports.
Onuachu joined Trabzonspor from Southampton on a season-long loan transfer last summer. He left after a disappointing campaign with first season in England that saw him register just 12 appearances.
However, in his first season with Trabzonspor, the former Genk man has impressed, registering twelve goals in 19 appearances for the club. His contributions have been key, helping Trabzonspor to third in the Super Lig.
Due to his performances, Trabzonspor want to keep him at the club, and they have opened talks with Southampton in order to make that happen. However, the drawback has been the money involved, as Southampton could demand up to €14 million.
Meanwhile, it appears Trabzonspor now have company in the attempt to sign Onuachu, as Turkish outlet, Mackolik reports that Goztepe, who just gained promotion to the Super Lig.
The club got relegated two seasons ago after five consecutive seasons in the Super Lig. But they just regained promotions after a failed attempt last season.
The feasibility of Goztepe signing Onuachu seems quite low because of their low pedigree. Also, their entire squad is worth just over €14 million according to Transfermarkt. Hence, their ability to match Southampton’s demand is in doubt.
However, by the summer, Onuachu should have gotten his next destination sorted.
