Ex-Super Eagles players Adepoju, Olofinjana attend Oyo Governor’s Cup opener

The inaugural Oyo State Governor’s Cup for Secondary School Students commenced with enthusiasm as 18 matches unfolded during the Preliminaries’ opening day, Soccernet.ng reports.

Sponsored by Peculiar Ultimate Concerns, the football championship witnessed a total of 55 goals across five centers on Monday.

Notably, former Super Eagles Midfielders Mutiu Adepoju and Seyi Olofinjana graced the event in Ibadan, praising the teenagers’ football prowess.

Urban Day Secondary School, Ibadan, kicked off victoriously, triumphing over Community Grammar School, Akinlumo, with a 5-0 win. Bishop Phillips Academy also dominated, securing a 6-0 victory against Idito Community Grammar School.

In Oyo, Fiditi Grammar School defeated Community Grammar School, Jobele, with a 2-0 score, while Anglican Methodist Secondary School, Oyo, outplayed Durbar Grammar School with a 3-0 win.

Expressing their thoughts, Olofinjana commended the quality of football and acknowledged the organizers and sponsors’ efforts. Similarly, Adepoju emphasized the significance of investing in school sports for Nigeria’s sporting future.

Yomi Elijah, Founder of Schools’ Sport Foundation, expressed satisfaction with the tournament’s organization and urged continuous commitment for its success.

Engineer Olalekan Adeleke, Project Manager of Peculiar Ultimate Concerns, encouraged fair play and sportsmanship among participants, affirming his satisfaction with the event’s organization.

The competition, initiated by the Schools Sports Foundation and sponsored by Peculiar Ultimate Concerns, aims to foster talent development in schools. Partners include Olafiranye Sports Foundation, Oyo State Ministry of Education, Ministry of Sports, Oyo State Sports Council, Kidzfoot Nigeria, among others.

Oyo Governor’s Cup 2024 Preliminaries commenced on Monday, 13th May 2024, showcasing promising talent and fostering grassroots football development across the state.
